INTRODUCTION -
Remington were the first to introduce a commercial typewriter
in 1873. It used the type bars which had only capital letters.
In 1888, the "touch typing" system was introduced.
This was followed by the introduction of the
first portable typewriter in 1920. IBM introduced a proportional
spaced typewriter in 1940. Single ball (element) typewriters
were introduced in 1961 which was followed by the dual spacing
(pitched) typewriters in 1970.
Also in the 1970's, electronic typewriters were introduced with
printwheels, daisywheels and disc type-wheels.
